Hi! I'm Sammy

hero

Hi, my name is Sammy Bensink and I'm a certified Creative Developer from the Netherlands. Ever since I started my creative journey in 2019, my main goal has always been to use the knowledge I've gained to explore and invent different kinds of digital products and designs.

During my studies I specialized in the fields of Graphic/Media Design and Frontend development. I also developed advanced skills while working with commonly used programs within Adobe Creative Cloud (e.g. Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects) and platforms/tools such as Next.js, Astro and Sveltekit for efficient website creation and launching. Furthermore I obtained proficient experience and understanding of several code languages like HTML, CSS and Javascript. My broad sense of familiarity with all these different tools, gives me the opportunity to bring in original ideas while finishing tasks and assignments in a way that aligns with the expectations of my clients.

At the moment, I'm expanding my skills in UI/UX as I discovered my great interest in this aspect of Web Design during my education. After graduating from college, I started taking multiple courses on the matter to further develop my expertise as a Creative Developer.

I spend my days doing things like..

  • UI / UX
  • Motion Design
  • Front-End
  • Graphic Design
  • Photography
  • Traveling
  • Painting

I love to create products like..

  • Brand guides
  • Websites
  • Wireframes
  • Animations
  • Posters
  • Social posts
  • Flyers
  • ... and more!!

Tools I am familiar with...

  • Hygraph

After graduating, I started working with clients such as Speak Easy, Harold K, and others. During this time, I realized I wanted to further develop myself within this field and expand my knowledge even more.

This led me to start with a UI/UX course, where I am deepening my understanding of the fundamentals of user experience and strengthening my skills in Figma.

Currently, I work with a variety of clients, helping to bring ideas to life by designing and building meaningful digital products. I'm also working on this site and making improvements.

  • Welp, time to see the world!

After studying for 6 years I needed to do other things too. I wanted to see my family in Indonesia for so long. So I decided, after graduating, I'm going to Asia. I went for around almost 3 months. Eventually I went to:

    • Indonesia, to see my family. This was my first time meeting them physically. I've stayed there a whole month living with my family. Seeing the culture, the food (I miss it so bad) and nature. It was a real unique experience. There were no tourists, only us learning from our families history.

    • After that, I went to Thailand. When I was little, I went on vacation to Thailand. It has always sticked with me and I wanted to experience to experience it again as a grown-up. It was still really magical, different but amazing in so many different ways. I even celebrated my birthday there, also really nice for once. We went through the islands and eventually ended up in Bangkok.

    • And at last, I went to Japan. Alone..... I never travelled alone abroad. I was really nervous at first. But I wanted to go to Japan for so long. Eventually I've had the time of my life there. Went with the bullet train, visited a lot of temples and being lost. I've started in Tokyo and ended my big adventure in Osaka and returned back torwards the Netherlands. I'm really proud that I decided to go travel alone in Japan.

When I arrived back home in The Netherlands, I was so happy to see everyone again :)

  • Graduated in Frontend Design & Development

After some though months, I did it! I had worked on a project called visual thinking, where I did some improvements with some fellow students. I've learned allot more about Svelte and API's like Hygraph and Sanity.

I also started to work for Harold K and thinking about my own portfolio. In this period I was imagining and sketching prototypes about what my portfolio would look like.

  • Tutoring in Frontend at University of Applied Sciences

The University of Applied Sciences (aka Hogeschool van Amsterdam) needed a few tutors to help with lessons for the bachelor of Communication Multimedia Design. Me and fellow tutors helped students understand frontend better and explain the fundamentals of it.

We helped them style their websites and how to improve their code.

  • Started my study in Frontend Design and Development

When I was studying Graphic Design, I created a Wordpress site. I really had an appeal toward websites. I liked the interaction and how about you can easily communicate to the user. But I had one goal for myself. I always wanted to learn how to code it.

So I started with an associate in Frontend Design and Development, located at the University of Applied Sciences (aka Hogeschool van Amsterdam) in Amsterdam.

At first, I was really nervous and overwhelmed. How was I ever going to learn this? Is this something for me? Eventually I started to manifest it and learn all sorts of thing about frontend:

    • the fundamentals
    • how to apply proper css code.
    • how to use JavaScript
    • Fetching and displaying data.
    • and so much more.

After a few hard learning months. I started to get the hang of it. I better understand how Frontend works and why things like accessibility, refactoring and testing matters.

Later on I was going to learn more about API's, frameworks and creating libraries

  • Graduated Graphic Design

Jippie! I got my degree!! after 4 years of hard work (and a pandemic) I finally got my degree in Graphic Design. I could call myself a real graphic designer now, wow I couldn't believe it.

The exams were rough, two whole weeks of designing and proving you're a decent designer. But it was all worth it. Sometimes I forget where I came from and what I've learned from it.

After my exams, I decided to start as a freelancer. I called my company SamaraFellaDina, My own name. I thought it looked pretty and I found and still find it a nice name for a freelance company. So I was glad I took the step.

  • Internship at NJR - Studio Bold

After my internship at Hall of Fame, I completed a six-month internship at NJR (Nationale Jeugdraad) , where I worked within Studio Bold. A studio organised and run by NJR that brings young creatives together on projects giving the youth a real voice and influence. In this studio are roles like:

    • Graphic Design
    • Audiovisual
    • Communication

This was a very fun internship and made me realise that I like to help people by using my skills and expertises. To create something that helps people get further and educate.

  • Internship at Hall of Fame

My first six-month internship, at the Hall of Fame in Tilburg. Hall of Fame represents the alternative subculture scene and functions as a combination of a poppodium, skatepark, and rehearsal space. The organisation hosts various events and sometimes collaborates with 013.

It was a real unique experience where I had a lot of freedom to create posts for Instagram and Facebook.

Here I decided to dive deeper into After Effects, which I used for a lot of different products for the Hall of Fame. I'm so glad I did this. It was not only fun, but it helped me achieve other opportunities later on in my career.
